Texans with severe epilepsy are one step closer to obtaining cannabis oil from dispensaries within the state.
For some patients, the cannabis product might be the only option left to help them reduce seizures. On Thursday, the application process opened for organizations seeking a dispensary license.
The Texas Compassionate Use Act, a 2015 Texas statute, made way for the legal cultivation and processing of non-psychoactive cannabis for patients with prescriptions.
The cannabis product will be made from plants engineered to have extremely low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the component that gets people high.
The bill requires the Texas Department of Public Safety, the regulatory agency over the program, to license at least three dispensing organizations by Sept. 1.
