Mainers Split On White House's Recreational Marijuana Stance

Portland – The White House says there will be greater enforcement of federal laws, when they come into conflict with states that allow recreational pot.

This is a reversal from the Obama Administration’s stance.

Question 1 became law at the end of January, allowing Maine residents to use and possess two and a half ounces of marijuana.

The No on 1 side released a statement Friday in response to the press secretary’s comments, saying in part that they "would welcome and support the Trump Administration taking a smarter approach to enforcing federal drug policy."

CBS 13 spoke to David Boyer with the Yes on 1 team Friday afternoon.

"This administration has said that they believe and value a state’s rights, Boyer said. And this is clearly a state’s rights, 10th amendment issue, and we hope that they’ll respect that and continue to let states determine their own marijuana policies."

Boyer is part of an advisory committee in Augusta that’s working on how to regulate recreational marijuana.
