The Village of Cumberland has received four applications to operate a medical marijuana dispensary business.

Application packages for Temporary Use Permits were submitted to the village before the January 15 deadline.

Staff reviewed the applications for completeness and indicated each contained all the required information and details.

The applicants are Trugreen Solutions Inc owned by George Oliver, Cumberland Pot Pourri owned by Ian and Katherine Kelly, Mid Island Medicinals owned by the Waverly Hotel and Pub, and Trichome Collective owned by Marwayne Enterprises Ltd.

The four locations targetted for the dispensaries are 2692 Dunsmuir Avenue, 2718 Dunsmuir Avenue, 3276 Third Street and 2744 Dunsmuir Avenue.

However, because the latter two locations are less than the 50 metre separation distance set as a condition by council from the Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Policy, only one can be approved.

As well, councillor Roger Kishi raised concerns about the 2744 Dunsmuir Avenue location because it is next to the Cumberland Library and is not permitted in the policy.

Public meetings as outlined in the TUP application will be held by the applicants and the results submitted by 3 p.m. on Feb 24.

Council referred the applications to the next meeting of the Advisory Planning Commission for review. Once all the information and pre-requisites are completed, including an APC report, staff will present them at the March 27 council meeting for endorsement.

Kishi feels it might take longer to process all the applications because he expects each one to have over 300 pages of information.

Senior Planner Judith Walker said they have booked 2 hours to review the documents but if need be they can stay a little bit longer. She added because members of the APC are volunteers, they find it hard to get all of them to attend.

"We will try out best to deal with it at that meeting," said Walker, who explained that they will go through the checklist to make sure that all the requirements are covered.

The successful applicants will be required to complete a business licence for the dispensaries.
