Jefferson City, Mo. – Two local lawmakers sponsored bills that would legalize medical marijuana in Missouri.
State Rep. Jim Neely, R-Cameron, sponsored HB437 which would allow people with serious medical conditions to use medical marijuana.
He said he supports medical marijuana after watching his daughter lose a tough battle with cancer two years ago.
Neely also said his experience as a physician gives him a unique perspective.
"As a physician, you want to try and make people comfortable," Neely said.
In the Missouri Senate, another local lawmaker sponsored a similar bill.
State Sen. Rob Schaaf, R-St. Joseph, sponsored SB153 which would allow medical marijuana be a treatment option for people with a serious medical condition.
Last year, a push to get medical marijuana on the November ballot fell short of the signatures needed.
Supporters are already working on getting the issue on the 2018 ballot.
