Dundalk, Md. – A Dundalk family is calling medical marijuana a medical miracle.
Lillyann Baker, who just turned 3 years old, has already had a challenging life. She has brain damage after suffering a head injury at 7 weeks old. Her mother, Cassandra Stephen, said Lillyann had multiple seizures a day, even while taking multiple medications.
“As many as she was having, it’s very difficult to see,” Stephen said.
Stephen looked into medical marijuana and bought cannabis oil online. She began giving Lillyann a drop of it by mouth once a day. Since then, Stephen said Lillyann’s seizures have stopped for nine months running.
“(We’re) proving doctors wrong, like her neurologist, (who) is very impressed (by) the progress that she has made. Her EEGs are coming back so much better,” Stephen said.
Maryland will soon allow medical marijuana into the marketplace, but some worry that too much is unknown about its ultimate affect.
CBD hemp, or cannabis oil, is a form of medical marijuana with low levels of THC, the chemical that causes a high. Cannabis oil could be one of the products available at Maryland’s first dispensaries, which are currently going through the licensing process.
“First, I don’t doubt medical marijuana may have medical value,” substance abuse counselor Mike Gimbel said.
But Gimbel worries about prescribing a drug for medical purposes that’s not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
“The public is taking medical marijuana, believing that there is somehow that there is an approval that it’s a safe drug. We don’t know yet,” Gimbel said.
Lillyann still has many challenges ahead. The brain damage affects her motor skills and development, but unless her seizures return, her mother is sold on cannabis oil.
“It has brought so much stress off of us. We get to see her happy instead of having a seizure or just lying there,” Stephen said.
Cannabis oil apparently isn’t cheap. Lillyann’s mother said one 10-gram tube costs $400.
