Austin Businesses that want to dispense legally approved cannabis oil in Texas may soon be expected to pay a substantial application fee.

The original license application fee for a CBD oil dispensing organization was set back in December 2015 at $6,000. The Department of Public Safety is considering a proposal to raise that fee up to $1.3 million.

The costs are much higher than they expected because theyve created this unreasonably restrictive market and that there are only a few patients that would have access to that medicine said Heather Fazio of the Marijuana Policy Project.

Heather Fazio of the Marijuana Policy Project says theres still enough time for the State Legislature to get things right and make it more affordable.

We have a lot of opportunity to spread the compassion and make this program more inclusive, Fazio says.

Fazio thinks that with the state imposing those high fees, it will raise the cost of the legal cannabis oil and keep patients who it benefits from getting access to it.

Those wishing to start a legal CBD oil business in Texas have until November 28th to comment on the new proposals before members of DPS Public Safety Commission vote on the changes.

The Texas Compassionate Use Act is scheduled to take effect in September 2017.
