Orange County, Fla. – The owner of Knox Nursery, a medical marijuana dispensary in Orange County, said his operation will soon be distributing the drug, and he hopes to name one product after a little girl fighting cancer.
“To meet a child in need of something, it’s just going to be so gratifying,” said Bruce Knox inside his facility in Winter Garden.
Dahlia Barnhart is about to turn 6 years old, and she was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 2.
“We’ve been to six hospitals in three states and Dahlis is on her third experimental chemotherapy trial,” said Moriah Barnhart, the child’s mother.
Barnhart said the only thing that eased the painful side effects of treatment was cannabis oil.
“Now, there is cannabis growing in Central Florida and Dahlia is well enough to get a service dog,” Barnhart said.
After meeting Dahlia, Knox wanted to help, so he arranged to have a local breeder, Bay Lake Doodles, donate a service dog to the Barnhart family, just before Dahlia’s sixth birthday.
“It’s an emotional experience,” said Barnhart. “We didn’t even know if she would make it to her third birthday, let alone her sixth. And now she’s happy and active.”
“It’s a medication that can treat so many conditions, even above what’s currently approved,” said Knox.
Knox’s strain of marijuana is non-euphoric and has low levels of THC. In November, Florida voters will decide whether or not to legalize all forms of medical marijuana.
“If Amendment 2 passes, we’ll deal with it that day after. On Nov. 9 we’ll decide where we go from there,” said Knox. “For now, we’re focused on excelling at the opportunity that’s in front of us.”
