As he is wont to do, our old pal J.R. Lind found a quirky angle on Nashville’s newly-passed ordinance creating a civil penalty for possession of small amounts of marijuana: It won’t be enforced county-wide.

Officials in Belle Meade, Berry Hill and Goodlettsville confirmed Cooper’s reading.
The legislation would not change how we deal with small amounts of marijuana. We would issue a state misdemeanor citation for the offense,” Belle Meade police chief Tim Eads said.
The funny upshot of all this is that an ordinance pushed by proponents as a way to possibly reduce penalties for the marginalized offenders who bear the brunt of law enforcement in general will end up meaning that the harsher penalty is maintained in some of the city’s wealthier, and whiter, enclaves. Lind notes that some suburbs, like Oak Hill and Forrest Hills, rely on Metro police, so the lesser penalty will be an option there.
The conclusion: If you’re lighting up in Belle Meade, best to do it inside your mansion.
