Baton Rouge, LA – LSU is moving forward with plans to grow medical marijuana for the state.
Bill Richardson, LSU Vice President of Agriculture, presented his plan to the Baton Rouge Rotary Club Wednesday afternoon.
The marijuana will be grown off campus, and no students will be involved. It will be processed into medicinal form such as a pill or ointment, and then distributed to pharmacies.
The Louisiana Legislature passed a measure in 2015 allowing LSU and Southern University to undertake the project. Southern officials said they will make an announcement about their plans later this year, but LSU is ready to start soon.
“This is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. We’ve learned a lot about it in the last several months. And there’s a lot of interest in what we’re doing in Louisiana. Our operation is strictly pharmaceutical,” Richardson said.
