Craig City Council entertained discussion on retail marijuana at its biweekly meeting Tuesday night.

The topic was brought forward by the Committee to Grow Craig, which recently circulated a petition to get an ordinance on the November ballot that – if passed by voters would allow recreational marijuana to be grown and sold in Craig.

The petition failed to get the required signatures, but Grow Craig is still hoping to bring the initiative to a vote.

Paul James, manager of the Craig Apothecary and chairman of the Committee to Grow Craig, said other small Colorado communities facing similar financial setbacks to Craig have greatly benefited from opting in on retail marijuana.

Craig Mayor Ray Beck said he believed retail marijuana would have unintended consequences in Craig and he did not support the ordinance.

Although the majority of the council did not voice support for recreational marijuana sales, it was agreed upon that the voters should have a say.

“I don’t think that seven people should make that decision for 8,793 people who are in the city of Craig,” Councilman John Ponkivar said.

James said Grow Craig would continue to advocate for retail marijuana and hopes to keep working with city council toward getting an initiative on the April 2017 ballot.
