Lake In The Hills – McHenry resident Susan Peterson applied for medical marijuana to help with pain caused by her multiple sclerosis.

“The alternatives are pharmaceuticals, and they have side effects,” Peterson said.

The process wasn’t easy, she said, and now she’s organizing an information session so others can have help while going through the process of applying for medical marijuana.

The Healing Clinic, a medical marijuana clinic and patient advocacy center, will lead the presentation from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 27 at the Lake in the Hills Fire Station, 1020 W. Algonquin Road, Lake in the Hills.

At the presentation, experts will provide information on how medical marijuana compares with other treatments, and attendees will be walked through the application process from fingerprinting to submitting materials to the state, Peterson said.

Silver Star Protection Group will be at the event so people can get fingerprinted, and representatives from a medical marijuana dispensary, Nature’s Care, will be available for questions.

Susan Frankovic, with Nature’s Care, said there are 39 conditions that are approved to receive medical marijuana treatments, the most recent being post-traumatic stress disorder and terminal illness.

“[Medical marijuana] is easy to regulate, and it’s so much better for you,” than taking other pain medicines, Frankovic said. “… We’ve had so many great responses.”

Frankovic said most people coming to the dispensary come for the pain control, but after treatments others find their symptoms are lessened, and sometimes their condition improves.
